Internet of Things success stories

The Internet of Things (IoT) is changing the way many businesses operate, providing smart and efficient solutions. Saving time and money across a broad range of industries, it’s no surprise many businesses are adopting IoT technology to access its benefits and incredible potential.

If you’re still unsure about IoT and how it could benefit your business, here are some success stories that may inspire you to seriously consider using it.

Healthcare

There are a whole host of examples of how the IoT is transforming areas of the healthcare industry.

One amazing example is BabyBe, which helps to replicate the movement of a mother’s heartbeat and lung movements to connect premature babies with their mothers.

Made up of three parts, BabyBe has a bionic mattress for the baby to lie on in the incubator, and a sensor bag known as the turtle, which the mother holds against her chest to mimic the feel of the baby.

The final part is the cradle, which sits next to the incubator and translates the data between the turtle and the mattress. The system is designed to recreate the crucial movements that can improve the healing and development time of the baby.

Smart city initiatives

Governments around the world are realising the potential of IoT and using it to support everything from water management and energy conservation to transportation and the environment.

One great example is a public safety initiative in Copenhagen, Denmark. They replaced more than half the streetlights with smart, energy-efficient LED lights connected to a smart network. The sensors within the lights enable auto-dimming based on the time of day if there is a full moon and even when they sense walkers or bikers passing by.

Consumer Goods

The IoT has even offered success to consumer packaged goods brands, a great example being that of British beverage company, Diageo.

For its flagship Johnnie Walker Blue Label Whisky, Diageo has created smart bottles, which have a printed sensor tag that can detect if the bottle has been sealed and opened. The bottle also use Near Field Communication (NFC) to send personal messages to consumers by reading the tag with their smartphones.

Events and customer experience

Businesses are always looking for new ways to make the customer experience more seamless and enjoyable.

A great example of the use of the IoT for this is Disney’s Magicband. This wristband provides guests with access to their hotel room and park amenities, and even allows them to reserve rides and purchase food.

The band also tracks the actions and movements of guests around the park, which can help Disney to optimise its services, as well as providing a digital keepsake of customers’ Disney experiences.

If you’ve been thinking about how the IoT can transform an area of your business, now is the time to do it.
